How to set up and optimise your Google Business Profile in Singapore

For a Singapore business with a location or a service area, your Google Business Profile is often more valuable than your website's homepage. Here is how to set it up properly and keep it working.

When someone in Singapore searches for a service "near me", Google usually answers with the local map pack — the little map and three business listings above the normal results. Those listings are powered by Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business), not by your website. If you run a clinic, a repair shop, a law firm or any business people visit or call locally, getting this right is the highest-leverage hour you will spend on local search.

Claim and verify the profile

Start by searching your business name on Google. If a profile already exists, claim it; if not, create one. Google will verify that you control the business, usually by phone, email or video. Verification is non-negotiable — an unverified profile cannot be edited or trusted by Google — so do this first and do not skip it.

Get the fundamentals exactly right

  • Business name. Use your real, exact business name. Stuffing keywords into it ("Best Cheap Aircon Repair Singapore") violates Google's guidelines and risks suspension.
  • Primary category. This is the single most influential field. Choose the most specific category that describes what you do, not a broad one. Add secondary categories for other services.
  • NAP consistency. Your Name, Address and Phone must match exactly what appears on your website and other listings. Inconsistent details (a "#05-02" here, a "05-02" there) quietly erode local ranking.
  • Service area vs address. If customers come to you, show your address. If you go to them, set a service area instead of a public address.
  • Hours. Keep them accurate, including public holidays — a wrong "open" status is a fast way to lose a customer's trust.

Fill in everything else

Google rewards complete profiles. Add your services with descriptions and prices where you can, a genuine business description, your website and booking links, and — crucially — real photos. Profiles with authentic photos of the premises, team and work get more views and clicks than bare listings. Do not use stock images; Singapore customers can tell.

Reviews are the local ranking multiplier. A complete profile with a steady stream of genuine, recent reviews consistently outperforms an abandoned one. We wrote a separate guide on how to get more Google reviews in Singapore the honest way — never buy them.

Keep it active

A Google Business Profile is not a set-and-forget listing. Post updates, offers and news through the profile; answer questions in the Q&A section before competitors or strangers do; and reply to every review, positive or negative, in a measured, human voice. Activity signals to Google that the business is real and current, and it signals to customers that someone is home.

How it fits your wider local SEO

Your profile does not work in isolation. It is strongest when your website has a genuine Singapore location or service page, consistent citations across local directories, and content that answers what your customers actually search. That full picture is what our Local SEO service builds, and our local SEO checklist covers the on-site side step by step.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. Google renamed Google My Business to Google Business Profile. It is the free tool that controls how your business appears in Google Search and Maps, including the local map pack. The features are the same; only the name changed.

Common reasons include an unverified profile, an incomplete or inconsistent profile, the wrong primary category, few or no recent reviews, or simply strong competition in a dense area. Verify the profile, choose the most specific category, keep your name, address and phone consistent everywhere, and build genuine reviews over time.

No. Google's guidelines require your real, exact business name. Adding keywords or location terms you don't legally trade under can get the profile suspended. Rank through accurate categories, complete information and real reviews instead.

Very. Profiles with genuine, current photos of the premises, team and work receive more views and clicks than bare listings. Use real images, not stock — they build trust and give Google fresh signals that the business is active.
